Sonner Kehrt is an investigative reporter at The War Horse, a national non-profit newsroom covering the military. Her reporting on veterans and service members has been discussed by the White House and the House and Senate Armed Service Committees, as well as cited to the Supreme Court. Her writing has also appeared in The New York Times, WIRED Magazine, The Verge, Inside Climate News, and other publications, and was included on the 2020 Best American Essays notable list. She is a 2023-2024 Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellow.

She has a masters in democracy and governance studies from Georgetown University and a masters of journalism from UC Berkeley, where her work won the school’s Clay Felker Prize for Excellence in Longform Journalism. She is also a lecturer at UC Berkeley, where she teaches courses in reporting, writing, and ethics.

Before journalism, she worked in support of arctic research as a Coast Guard officer, driving an 18,000 ton icebreaker across the polar icecap. She is a graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy.
